Marketing and Dangers, Another common gimmick of Hoodia Supplements
Hoodia nutritional products can be easily found for sale on the internet and in health food stores. They promise safe, side effect free appetite suppression.
Each product simultaneously praises the benefits Hoodia and bashes their competitors’ products. So it is difficult to determine which products may actually contain an effective dosage of Hoodia.
Often a Hoodia supplement will state that their product has been tested in a lab, even though the lab is located in Costa Rica.
Another common gimmick is the use of false comparison websites that purport to compare without bias a selection of Hoodia products.
Some supplement distributors are known to create fake comparison websites direct business to their products.
While the San Bushmen have been using the Hoodia plant as an appetite suppressant for centuries with no obvious side effects, their usage of it may not be the same as someone taking it every day.
The Bushmen use it sparingly, usually just when they are about to make a long trip across the desert.
The dangers and effectiveness of Hoodia supplements have not been determined. In fact, the FDA has informed several companies that the claims they are making regarding their product are completely unproven.
While Hoodia may be effective when combined with a proper diet, the danger is that someone taking unregulated Hoodia may suppress their appetite to the point where they no longer consume enough calories and nutrients to survive.
The body needs a certain minimum amount of food to function, even if you are trying to lose weight. If Hoodia is as effective as is promised, it may pose a real danger, especially to someone with an eating disorder.
